If history has shown us anything in regards to interior design, it’s that tile is made to last. Archaeological sites are constantly turning up tiles from building materials and pottery that has survived the tests of time and nature; however, that doesn’t mean that tile patterns don’t go out of style or that those tiles won’t loose their new shine and luster. Painting ceramic tile is a great way to revitalize the look of a room and approach your design project with an economic alternative that doesn’t require you to rip up the floors and start from scratch. Here are some tips to get you started:
Tip #1. Select Your Paint With a Room in Mind
One thing to keep in mind when painting ceramic tile is how often the room is exposed to moisture, and how often the tiles themselves will be exposed to water. If you decide to paint the inside of a shower with a regular wall paint, the paint will begin to wash away and you will be left with a blotchy paint job that is less than desirable. For high moisture areas, use paint with a high resiliency paint such as epoxy paint or oil based paint.
Tip #2. Wash the Tiles Beforehand
Take a rag and some cleaning solution and make sure that you remove all particles, grease, and residue that are in the grout or on the tile. If you do not clean beforehand, you may see some signs of discoloration or rough paint on the tiles when you are done.
Tip #3. Provide Time for Drying
You should provide up to 48-hours for the paint to dry after you are done painting ceramic tiles. Tiles can be difficult to paint and color after they have been fired in production; if you do not provide ample time for the tile to dry, you could risk the paint peeling off of the tile and having to start all over again.
Tip #4. Great Creative
Let your creative be the guide just as if you were painting a picture or a decorative wall. You don’t just have to settle with one color. Your home should be an expression of you and you should paint your tile as such. The possibilities are endless such as custom design patterns, color schemes, or arrangements. Look for templates or make your own, and with a little planning, you could create something truly remarkable that will be sure to impress.
