I am one of the growing breed of those disenchanted with L.A. Two years ago, I rented a seven-acre property in the Emigrant Lake area outside of Ashland, Oregon and will soon be leaving...for the final time. Before I go, I want to take this opportunity to write you about one of the people who helped me get my house ready for sale, Robert Myers of “R&S Painting”. In telling you a little bit about Rob, I find it ironic that he is exactly the type of person and worker who defies my observations about Los Angeles. If there were more Roberts, I wouldn’t be fleeing L.A.!
The general contractor I picked for this job was a former fine carpenter who had just begun his career as an architect. His plan was to combine skills and knowledge in these two areas and build his own business. Because he was the husband of a close friend, I agreed to be the guinea pig for his first big job. We set a budget of approximately $30,000 (not including a new roof and driveway) and a timeline of six to seven months.
The contractor had few contacts, making it necessary for us to interview people found in advertisements including the yellow pages! Because he was at the beginning of his career, he could not afford to hire helpers nor pay any of the subcontractors ahead of time. All of that had to fall on me and I agreed, not knowing what I was getting myself into.
One year later, we reached Stage Two, repainting the house. By this time, it was clear that, although the contractor and I shared an appreciation of beauty and a certain need for perfection, our rate of activity and need for finishing the job were diametrically different. When Robert came on the job, and into my life, he met a customer who had frayed nerves, a pocketbook with holes in it and a growing distrust for anyone who had anything to do with the construction industry.
Not only did Robert prove to know his craft inside-out, spotting immediately what was on the wall or ceiling, predicting timelines accurately and dependably, and definitely not expecting me to support his family for a year or two; - he started work early and didn’t complain about it. And he did his work methodically, thoroughly and professionally and left the place like a Beverly Hills china store. Robert was originally to have been here for about a month but, as the days passed and his own rate of activity accelerated while my agonized contractor slowed down to admire his work, it was clear who the real contractor was.
The reason for going into such detail is to make it clear that, without Robert, this project would never have been successfully completed. As a result, I can heartily recommend Robert to anybody who is considering embarking upon a remodeling or new construction project. The skill and dedication he brings to the job is reflected not only in his technique and workmanship but, in his wonderful nature and in his commitment to finishing the job to the utmost satisfaction of the owner/customer. The fact that, in my case, he was willing to pitch in during the last month doing everything and anything that needed to be finished, from lighting the patio to refinishing the deck, makes him a standout in community.
The best indicator about howl feel about Robert’s services is that he is the only painter I would ever consider using.
